Mirto, a progressive teacher, is assigned to a backward village, where her ideas find opposition from the parents. She falls in love with Stephanos, the mayor's son, whom she marries. As soon as the marriage ends, the eve of 28 Oct, 1940, the war with Italy breaks out. Stephanos is enlisted and after a while, news of his death arrives. Mirto continues her teaching job, aided by a colleague of hers Angelos. After liberation Angelos proposes marriage and Mirto accepts, although she still loves her dead husband. However, Stephanos, who was wounded and healed in an Italian hospital returns and the couple lives happily ever after.
