Made in Japan (1993) - Also known as 僕らはみんな生きている

cowboy from “Tampopo”) who appears to have gone native but actually maintains a cynical detachment from everything around him. As does the movie, which holds Nippon materialism, corrupt military governments and insurgent opportunism in equal contempt. While that keeps the tale emotionally cool, it does give it satirical bite — who wouldn’t laugh at the sight of Japanese suits trying to protect themselves from gunfire by handing out business cards? The attractive pic’s patently insular title will mean plenty in its parochial island base, but it needs to be rethought to move beyond marginal foreign consumption. “Made in Japan” springs to mind.
