Set on the island of Senja in Northern Norway in 1877. Båremor, a 14 year old girl is washed ashore almost dead. No-one knows her and she remembers nothing of her past. A poor fisherman family take care of her, but she never feels at home among these coastal people. Soon she meets infamous Bårr whose boat she hides to escape from the fishing village.
